A long trip is finally over. What do you want most?

A long walk shows who you are

Put a handful of people on the same road for months and you'll learn more about them than a year of dinner parties would ever tell you. Somebody takes charge of the map. Somebody quietly carries more than their share. Somebody can't stop asking when lunch is. That's a big part of why The Lord of the Rings still holds up: the story is enormous, but what keeps people coming back is a small group of very different characters working out how to get along on the way.

This Lord of the Rings character test borrows that idea. It's an unofficial, free quiz of twelve questions about trips, chores, and the people you travel with, and it takes about two minutes. There's no sign-up. At the end you're matched with one of eight characters from Middle-earth.

The eight you might get

Frodo takes on the hard thing nobody else will and keeps his doubts to himself. Sam looks after everyone, starting with whether they've eaten. Gandalf sees further ahead than the rest and is patient about it, mostly. Aragorn is more capable than he lets on and slow to accept the big role everyone expects of him. Legolas stays calm, notices everything, and keeps a little distance. Gimli is gruff, proud, funny, and fiercely loyal once you've earned it. Éowyn is done being told to wait at home. Pippin is curious, cheerful, and somehow always in the middle of whatever just went wrong.

Seven of them belong to the Fellowship that sets out from Rivendell. Éowyn comes from Rohan and joins the story later, but she's too good a match for a certain kind of person to leave out. Each result page explains what that character brings to a group, where they get in their own way, and the companion who suits them best.

Books, movies, or both

You don't need to have read Tolkien's three volumes, first published in 1954 and 1955, or to have watched Peter Jackson's three films from 2001 to 2003. The questions never mention Middle-earth, and the results describe personality rather than plot, so there are no major spoilers. Where the books and the movies paint someone a little differently, the descriptions stick to what both versions share. If you've only seen the films, you'll still recognize everyone.

Questions about the Lord of the Rings Character Test

No. This is an unofficial, fan-made quiz. It is not affiliated with, endorsed by, or sponsored by the Tolkien Estate, Middle-earth Enterprises, New Line Cinema, or Warner Bros.

How many questions are in the test?

Twelve. Most people finish in about two minutes. You can go back and change earlier answers before you submit the last one.

Which Lord of the Rings characters can I get?

There are eight results. You can get Frodo Baggins, Samwise Gamgee, Gandalf, Aragorn, Legolas, Gimli, Éowyn, or Pippin.

Is it based on the books or the movies?

Both. The results describe each character's personality in a way that fits Tolkien's books and Peter Jackson's films, so it works whichever version you know.

Can I retake the test?

Yes, as many times as you like. Use the Retake button on your result page, or just start again from this page.
